Industrial companies spend significant time and money protecting their facilities from fire.

Refineries, chemical plants, airports, mines, manufacturing plants, sawmills, recycling facilities, and other high-risk operations often have detailed fire protection and risk management programs. They invest in hazard analyses, firewater systems, gas detection, shutdown systems, emergency response planning, mechanical integrity programs, inspections, and maintenance standards.

These safeguards are in place to protect people, production, infrastructure, and business continuity.

But one fire risk is often harder to see because it moves around the site every day.

Mobile equipment.

Forklifts. Service trucks. Cranes. Generators. Loaders. Telehandlers. Ground support equipment. Rental machines. Contractor equipment. Pumping units. Temporary power units.

These machines may not be the largest or most expensive assets on site. In some cases, they may not even be owned by the facility. But they often work close to the infrastructure companies spend millions of dollars protecting.

In many cases, these costs can far exceed the value of the machine itself.

A loader fire in an open yard may be costly. A loader fire inside a sawmill, recycling facility, mine, port, or processing plant may create a much larger event.

A generator fire may damage the generator. But if that generator is supporting a drilling operation, hospital, data center, or critical process, the impact can reach far beyond the equipment.

A deicing vehicle fire may start on the vehicle. But if that vehicle is operating beneath or near an aircraft, the exposure becomes much more serious.

That is why mobile fire suppression should not be viewed only as equipment protection. In many operating environments, it is part of facility protection, operational continuity, and worker safety.

A useful way to understand this concept is to compare the value of the machine with the potential consequence of a fire in its operating environment.

This comparison is not intended to replace a formal Fire Risk Assessment. Instead, it helps illustrate how exposure can change based on where equipment is used.

For example, the same forklift may carry very different levels of risk depending on where it operates.

The machine value stays the same.

The consequence changes dramatically.

That is the point. A mobile asset does not become more valuable because it enters a refinery, aircraft hangar, chemical plant, data center, sawmill, mine, port, or recycling facility. But the potential impact of a fire can increase significantly because of what surrounds it.

  • How quickly could the operation recover?

For many facilities, those answers matter more than the purchase price of the machine.

Industrial companies already understand consequence-based risk.

They use it to evaluate fixed assets, process hazards, emergency response planning, and business continuity. They look at what could happen if a failure occurs, how far the impact could spread, and what safeguards are needed to reduce that exposure.

Mobile equipment should be part of that same conversation.

Instead of asking only, “How much is the machine worth?” organizations should also ask, “What is this machine capable of damaging if a fire occurs?”

That single question can change how mobile equipment fire risk is evaluated.

It moves the discussion from asset value to operational consequence. It helps teams identify machines that may appear lower-risk on paper but create high-consequence exposure in the field.
